Congratulations, very pleased the honour has gone to this 'liberal luvvie'! 'Reading aloud is such a powerful and deliberate act' - this rang such a bell - even alone, it takes on a different life to in your head
"The plans for the plaque caused a bit of a stir in the PLS. It was going to have just the last line as the inscription, but after a heated debate, the PLS insisted both it and the one before were used. Because, like all great poetry, the couplet is ambiguous." Good to see that serious debate is alive and well! And as a Larkin fan, it's great to see the PLS in such good (liberal) hands.
I will be re-reading them later Rosie. I am Hull born and raised and he comes to mind so often. Passed the graveyard down Sculcoates the other day and thought he would so disappointed it has been left to wither. Or maybe not. Think it's time I joined the society...
What a wonderful President! Rolls up her sleeves, cycles across London, always keen to come to Hull - and knows her Larkin! We like our luvvie lots.
Thank you dear Chair!

I enjoyed reading this. Poetry is such a powerful form of literature.

Has me reaching for my book of Larkin poetry.
Love An Arundel Tomb. Definitely needs that penultimate line!

Poignant yet spare- the heart - enough to land the spaces with more of life's less...
Thankyou Ima. I know.
